Private Orton-Gillingham Tutoring

I offer one-on-one tutoring for students in grades K-5 who struggle with reading and spelling.  Some students have an official dyslexia diagnosis, while others have difficulty with literacy tasks. I meet students on the Upper East Side of Manhattan or online.  Each lesson is tailored to the student. I focus on the concepts they need while leading them to success.

What is the time commitment?
Tutoring sessions run from 45-60 minutes, depending on the student’s stamina and needs. For those with a dyslexia diagnosis or who need significant remediation, at least two sessions per week on non-consecutive days are recommended.

How will I see progress?
Tutoring takes time, so it’s important to know it’s working. At the end of each month, I will send you a progress report describing the skills your child is building, their achievements, and concepts that have been introduced.

It is always great to hear parents tell me that their child is starting to enjoy reading and does so with greater ease. That is the best kind of progress!

How can I begin?

Step 1: Schedule an Initial Consultation
Send me an email to schedule a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation.  I look forward to hearing about your child and how I can be of help. If you are interested in moving forward, we will schedule an assessment.

Step 2: Comprehensive Assessment
Time for the detective work to begin! I conduct a set of assessments that help me learn about your child’s literacy skills. Auditory discrimination, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, letter-sound correspondence, decoding (reading), encoding (spelling), handwriting, comprehension, and written expression are covered.
Depending on the student, the full set of assessments takes 60-120 minutes with plenty of quick breaks.

Step 3: Follow-up Consultation
We have a phone call discussing the results of your child’s assessment, the plan of instruction developed for them, and next steps.

Step 4: Begin Tutoring
Now for the fun part! After learning more about your child’s interests and needs, I will create customized lessons that target needed skills and support strengths. Each lesson follows a comfortable routine, so students know what to expect. Their success is supported at every step.

Many parents ask how long their child will need tutoring. This is an excellent question, but it is difficult to answer because each child is unique and learns at a different rate. Anna Gillingham, one of the developers of the methodology, says practitioners should “Go as fast as you can, but as slow as you must.”
